Tá mé tar éis seachtain a chaitheamh i nGaeltacht Dhún na nGall – i nGleann Fhinne. Bhí mé beagán neirbhíseach nuair a bhí mé ag tiomáint go Scoil Náisiúnta an Choimín ar an Domhnach agus ní raibh biseach ar chúrsaí nuair a shiúil mé trí na doirse.
Bhuail mé le Micheál (an Príomhoide) ar dtús agus chuir sé fáilte mhór romham. Cuireadh mé i rang/leibhéal a ceathair agus thosaigh an múinteoir Odhrán ag caint linn.
Gach lá, bhíomar ag caint le chéile sa rang agus ag foghlaim rudaí cosúil le seanfhocail agus gramadach. I rith na seachtaine, bhí an aimsir chaite, an aimsir láithreach agus an aimsir fháistineach á bhfoghlaim againn freisin.
Cé go ndeachaigh mé ar scoil i mBun Dobhráin agus gur fhoghlaim mé mo chuid Gaeilge ansin, chuala mé a lán focal as “Dún na nGall” nár chuala mé riamh! Ach is maith an rud é sin!

Maidin Dé Céadaoin, tháinig bean áitiúil darbh ainm Áine isteach sa rang agus d’inis sí dúinn faoi stair áitiúil Ghleann Fhinne agus faoi chúpla duine a bhí ina gconaí ann fadó fadó.
San iarnóin ar an Déardaoin, chuamar ar thuras beag timpeall an cheantair agus bhí Áine linn arís ag insint scéalta faoin saol crua a bhí ag daoine fadó agus ag taispeáint na seantithe dúinn a raibh siad ina gcónaí iontu.
Bhí ceol agus céilí ar siúl gach tráthnona agus bhí píobaire darbh ainm Christy ag seinm na bpíob taobh amuigh den scoil iarnóin amháin.
Ar an Aoine, an lá deireanach, bhíomar arís cosúil le gach lá, ag caint leis na daoine sa rang faoi laethanta saoire, caitheamh aimsire agus saol teaghlaigh. Freisin, bhíomar ag caint leis na scoláirí eile as gach cearn den domhan a bhí ag foghlaim Gaeilge an tseachtain seo. Cuireadh i bhfoirne muid agus bhí tráth na gceist againn. Bhí an bua ag m’fhoireann agus fuair muid seacláid mar dhuais – bhí mé an-sásta leis sin!

Ag siúl iar-nóin Deardaoin/Walking on Thursday afternoon
Bhuail mé le a lán daoine nua i rith na seachtaine ó Éirinn agus ó áiteanna cosúil leis na Stáit Aontaithe agus an tSualainn agus is rud an-mhaith é na daoine sin a fheiceáil ag foghlaim Gaeilge.
Bhí am iontach agam sa Ghaeltacht agus ba mhaith liom buíochas a thabhairt do mo mhúinteoir Odhrán agus do Shiobhán agus Rónán ó Oideas Gael. Beidh mé ar ais arís ar an bhliain seo chugainn, le cúnamh Dé!

A week in the Donegal Gaeltacht.
I have just spent a week in the Donegal Gaeltacht – in Glenfinne. I was a little nervous when I drove to Scoil Náisiúnta an Choimín on Sunday but I needn’t have worried as I walked through the doors.
I first met Micheál (the Principal) and he made me feel very welcome. I was put in class/level four and the teacher Odhrán started talking to us.
Every day, we talked together in class and learned things like proverbs and grammar. During the week, we also learned the past tense, present tense and future tense.
Although I went to school in Bundoran and learned my Irish there, I heard a lot of words from “Dún na Donegal” that I had never heard before! But that is a good thing!
On Wednesday morning, a local woman named Áine came into class and told us about the local history of Glenfinne and about a few people who lived there long ago. On Thursday afternoon, we went on a little tour of the area and Áine was with us again telling stories about the hard lives of people long ago and showing us the old houses they lived in.
There was music and céilí every evening and a piper named Christy played the pipes outside the school one afternoon.
On Friday, the last day, we were again like every day, talking to the people in the class about holidays, hobbies and family life. We were also talking to the other students from all over the world who were learning Irish this week. We were put into teams and had a quiz. My team won and we got chocolate as a prize – I was very happy with that!
I met a lot of new people during the week from Ireland and places like the US and Sweden and it’s great to see people learning Irish.
I had a great time in the Gaeltacht and I would like to thank my teacher Odhrán and Siobhán and Rónán from Oideas Gael. I’ll be back next year, God willing!
