Donegal is blessed with 12 Blue Flags – 11 of them at beaches – Bundoran, Carrickfinn, Culdaff, Downings, Fintra, Killahoey, Marblehill, Murvagh, Narin/Portnoo, Rossnowlagh, and Stroove together with Rathmullan Marina. The Blue Flag is internationally recognised and assures bathers of the highest standards of water quality and safety. In addition, Dooey, Magheroarty, Drumnatinney, Ballyheirnan and Port Arthur have each received Green Coast Awards for 2026, further highlighting the quality and appeal of Donegal’s coastal offering.

Carrickfinn Beach is an extensive sandy beach with sand dunes and is located close to the beautiful Annagry village, a Gaeltacht area where the visitor can engage in the culture and heritage of this unique region where Irish is still the main everyday language.

Killahoey Blue Flag Beach
Killahoey beach consists of a sandy beach with a large inflowing estuary including a large mud flat at the east of the beach. These are exposed at times during the tidal phase during the day. The beach is contained to the west by low lying land and sheltered to the north-west by the estuary and land opposite at Horn Head.

Portarthur Green Coast Beach
Portarthur beach consists of a long sandy beach; confined by a rocky outcrop east of Inishmeane Island to the North and a small estuary to the south. The beach faces west onto the Atlantic Ocean and get a relatively strong wash of water onto the beach but is protected to an extent by the network of small islands in the area.

Magheraroarty Green Coast Beach
Magheraroarty beach consists of a long sandy beach. It is on a spit of land with the Atlantic Ocean to the West and Ballyness Bay to the East, and the island of Inishbofin to the North. The beach is west facing into the Atlantic Ocean and gets a strong wash of water from the rough sea directly onto the beach.

Drumnatinny Green Coast Beach
Drumnatinny beach consists of a long sandy beach; confined by Ballyness Bay to the West and by Crockagarran and a small series of headlands to the East. The beach is North facing into the Atlantic Ocean and gets a strong wash of water from the rough sea directly onto the beach.

Ballyhiernan Green Coast Beach
Ballyhiernan beach consists of a long sandy beach; confined by Rinboy Point to the West and Rinmore Point to the East. There are three bays at Ballyhiernan Beach; Carrickachurdin Bay, Kinlackagh Bay and Trabane Bay. The beach is North facing into the Atlantic Ocean and get a strong wash of water past the headland and rough seas coming onto the beach.
